Our beloved cat Otto got attacked by a coyote almost three weeks ago. We arrived home in time to see the coyote trot across the road with our cat hanging limp in his mouth. Michael chased the coyote on his bike and he dropped Otto, who lay on the neighbor’s lawn unconscious. We raced him to the emergency vet and while they saved our cat, they were unable to save his mangled front paw. It had to be amputated two weeks later because of infection.
Otto is back at home and seems to be healing well. The experience has made me interested in finding out what books and videos are out there on three-legged cats. I didn’t find much in the way of video – which might inspire us to produce a video project somewhere down the line. But I did find a number of children’s books featuring three-legged cats, including this one by Margaret Mahy, who is probably my favorite author ever.
Mahy is from my homeland, New Zealand, and she writes mainly for children and young adults. Her first book, A Lion In The Meadow was the first book I can remember my mother reading to me when I was three or four. As an adult, I realize that many of my interests and tastes were shaped by her writing which I enjoyed as a child.
As we look after our injured cat, I am comforted by the discovery that my favorite childhood author has written a story about a three-legged cat called Tom who dreams of travels to far away lands.
