About

Narrative Light LLC is the husband-and-wife team of Carolyn Moreau and Michael Kodas – multimedia storytellers who use photographs, video, audio and non-fiction writing to create web, print and broadcast content for editorial, non-profit and corporate clients. Michael Kodas is an author and photojournalist who has been honored by the Society of Professional Journalists, the National Press Photographers Association and Pictures of the Year International. He was a also a member of the team of journalists at The Hartford Courant, awarded the Pulitzer Prize for breaking news coverage in 1999. Carolyn Moreau is a television producer, newspaper reporter, and documentary videographer who has been honored by SPJ and the New England Associated Press News Executives Association. Between them, Carolyn and Michael have 50 years of experience in print, broadcast, and web-based news gathering. Their adventures in journalism have taken them to the Oval Office of the White House to the high camps of Mount Everest; from the rain forests of South America, to the submerged wreck of the Rainbow Warrior in the ocean off New Zealand; from the baseball diamonds of the World Series, to the mine fields of Southeast Asia.

But Narrative Light is also a philosophy. We believe that stories told in words and images are keys that open the human mind to the messages of our clients, and stories that need to be told. We strive to create precisely composed, lit and produced images of telling moments, and combine them with detailed reporting, polished writing, engaging audio, and an overriding commitment to honest and compelling storytelling that will make a difference in our clients’ businesses, and in the world.

History

We spent years coming up with a name we could believe in. In the end, we recalled all the beams of magical light that we followed to beautiful images, new friends and subjects, and important messages. We often find that a small spot of beautiful light will lead us a to stories we would never have found without it. We’ve never been disappointed when we followed a storytelling ray of light, and neither have our clients.

Training

Carolyn and Michael teach a variety of courses for photographers, writers, videographers and other professionals looking to develop their own storytelling skills or abilities to work in a media environment defined by accelerating change. Their courses include:

Small Camera Workshop, a popular class that teaches the basics of video storytelling with small, consumer cameras to scientists, educators, public relations professionals, journalists hoping to develop the skills to make moving images, and businesses who need to create video for outreach or to collaborate with television or documentary professionals.

Writing for Photographers, Photography for Writers, and Script Writing classes help professionals from other media disciplines expand their skill sets so they can pursue different types of stories and media outlets.

Media Training classes taught by Michael and Carolyn helps individuals and organizations to understand the current news media environment, how it has changed in recent years, and how to navigate the new media landscape and use the evolving media to each student’s best advantage.

All of Narrative Light’s classes are tailored to the individuals, small groups, or classroom settings they are serving. The classes are engaging and intensive but, just as importantly, fun!

In addition the above training opportunities, Michael regularly lectures and speaks about new media, his adventure and investigative photojournalism projects and books, and how storytelling can improve the world’s most pressing social and environmental problems. Feel free to contact Michael, Carolyn and Narrative Light to request a customized class, lecture or speaking engagement.
